CIS Data Migration – Electric Utility – Oracle

Project Overview

During my tenure at Red Clay Consulting, I led a significant data migration project for a major city in Midwestern United States (1.7 Million Customers). The project involved upgrading Oracle’s Customer Care and Billing (CCB), Meter Data Management (MDM), and Operational Device Management (ODM) systems to the advanced Oracle Customer to Meter (C2M) platform. This intricate integration unified three distinct systems into a single, cohesive platform, significantly enhancing functionality and operational efficiency.

Project Scope

The project aimed to upgrade and integrate three major Oracle applications—Customer Care and Billing (CCB), Meter Data Management (MDM), and Operational Device Management (ODM)—into a single, unified Oracle C2M (Customer to Meter) solution. This complex endeavor required meticulous planning, coordination, and execution to ensure a seamless transition, enhanced functionality, and improved data integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Data Migration Execution: Led the overall data migration activities, coordinating efforts to ensure a seamless transition.

Inventory Creation: Developed a comprehensive inventory of entities to be migrated using advanced data transport technologies.

Data Mapping and Transformation: Created detailed specifications to address application differences, field length discrepancies, and ID conflict resolutions.

Transformation and Load Scripts: Developed, tested, and executed scripts for data transformation and loading.

Rekey Stored Procedure: Addressed primary key conflicts in merged tables by assigning new unique keys, ensuring data integrity and smooth integration. This was particularly challenging due to the need to amalgamate service tasks and other entities across CCB, MDM, and ODM systems.

Audit and Reporting: Documented and generated comprehensive data migration audit reports.

Validation and Defect Resolution: Conducted technical and business validations of migrated data and actively participated in defect resolution.

Mock Go-Live Executions: Led and provided details for mock go-live discussions and preparations.

Outcome

Green Island Data successfully planned the data conversion project, ensuring a seamless transition to the new Oracle C2M system. The project addressed the complexity of integrating three major applications into one, managing primary key conflicts through the rekeying process and maintaining data integrity. Our meticulous planning, execution, and continuous validation ensured the project’s success and the client’s satisfaction.
