What have I done?
Performed large scale Utility CIS Data Conversion for Water Utility
Project Overview
As the Data Conversion Lead at Cogsdale, I managed a comprehensive data migration project for a major water utility in Central Alabama, serving 60,000 customers. This initiative involved transitioning from an outdated mainframe system to a modern Customer Information System (CIS) on MS-SQL Server. Given the outdated system’s limitations, the project required a tremendous amount of data cleaning and highly technical SQL scripting. Working with a cross-functional team, we overcame these challenges and performed extensive validation and cleanup to ensure data integrity. The project set a new standard for operational efficiency and data management, demonstrating expertise in handling complex data conversions and ensuring seamless integration with contemporary systems.
Source System: Antiquated Mainframe System (Previously Converted to MS-SQL Server)
Target System: Modern CIS Solution (MS-SQL Server)
Role: Data Conversion Lead
Project Scope
The project involved migrating extensive datasets from an antiquated mainframe system, previously transitioned to MS-SQL Server, to a cutting-edge Customer Information System (CIS). My responsibilities encompassed every phase of the data conversion process, from initial data assessment to the final execution of data migration.
Key Responsibilities
Data Assessment & Planning: Conducted detailed interviews with end-users to gain insights into the existing data structure and utilization. This informed a robust data mapping strategy that aligned the organization’s operational needs with the capabilities of the new CIS.
Data Mapping & Strategy Development: Developed a comprehensive data plan that outlined the migration pathways for critical data. This included the creation of sophisticated ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes tailored to the specific needs of the utility sector.
SQL Stored Procedure Development: Designed and implemented custom SQL stored procedures that efficiently transformed and migrated data to the new system. This ensured data integrity and compatibility with the new CIS architecture.
Project Management & Tracking: Utilized Jira to meticulously track project milestones, tasks, and issues, ensuring transparent and effective project management throughout the migration process.
Version Control: Leveraged Bitbucket for version control, ensuring all SQL code was securely managed and backed up, facilitating collaboration and historical tracking of changes.
Outcome
The project was a resounding success, marked by a seamless transition to the new CIS. The robust data integration strategies implemented during the project resulted in improved data accessibility and utility for the Water Authority, significantly enhancing operational efficiencies and decision-making processes.
